Molecular Insight studies prostate cancer detection
By Mass High Tech Staff
Molecular Insight Pharmaceuticals Inc. has begun a Phase 1 clinical trial to test molecular radiopharmaceutical candidates’ ability to detect metastatic prostate cancer.
The molecules, MIP-1072 and MIP-1095, seek out prostate-specific membrane antigen, a protein existing in the presence of prostate cancer cells.
Up to 12 study participants will take either MIP-1072 or MIP-1095 in one dose, followed by a dose of the opposite molecule two weeks later. The study required Molecular Insight to submit an Investigational New Drug application to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
The second-leading cause of cancer death in men is prostate cancer, according to the National Institutes of Health.
Cambridge-based Molecular Insight (Nasdaq: MIPI) specializes in the development of radiotherapeutics and molecular-imaging agents in the fields of oncology and cardiology. Founded in 1997 (as Imaging Biopharmaceuticals Inc.), the company reported a 2007 net loss of $60 million on $730,000 net revenue.
