Robert Langer receives 2008 Millenium Technology Prize

MIT professor Robert Langer has been awarded the 2008 Millenium Technology Prize, presented in Helsinki, Finland, for his work in developing biomaterials that help control accurate release of drugs in people.
The Technology Academy of Finland’s prestigious award recognizes technological benefits to humans and sustainable development. Tarja Halonen, president of the Republic of Finland, gave Langer the “Peak” prize trophy and 800,000 euros.
Langer’s work in biomaterials has fueled developments in tissue engineering, including artificial skin advancements. His controlled drug delivery innovations have also impacted cancer and heart disease developments.
Langer, a Mass High Tech All-Star honoree in 2004, is recognized at MIT as an Institute Professor, the highest faculty honor, and his patents have been distributed to more than 200 pharmaceutical, biotech and medical device companies.
