Digate, Suneby among execs picked as Clean Energy Fellows

By Mass High Tech Staff

The New England Clean Energy Council (NECEC) has named its first batch of entrepreneurs for its Clean Energy Fellowship Program, announced in April as part of the group’s ongoing efforts to develop a clean energy cluster in the area under the proposed $50 million Green Jobs Act.

The program is aimed at taking experienced, CEO-level entrepreneurs from a variety of industries and providing them with the necessary training to enter the clean energy industry. Activities for the selected participants will include classroom sessions, seminars and lectures from people in the region’s clean energy industry, project development with local venture capitalists and on-site visits to clean energy research labs in the area, as well as a visit to the National Renewable Energy Lab in Colorado, in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Energy.

More than 40 individuals applied for the fellowships, according to NECEC, from which 12 were selected. Assuming the Green Jobs Act is passed — it is currently before the state legislature — the  organization expects to make the fellowship awards in classes of about 12, two times per year.

The first NECEC Clean Energy Fellows are:

·        Aaron Bent - vice president of marketing  and business development, Polatis Inc.; co-founder of Continuum Photonics Inc.

·        Rick Daniels - founder, MultiLayer Coating Technologies Inc.; former VP of strategy and development for Polaroid Corp.

·        Chuck Digate - former MathSoft Inc. CEO; co-founder of Convoq Inc.

·        Paul Fenton - founder and CEO  of Axya Medical, Inc.

·        Joseph Krivickas - former CEO of Segue Software Inc.; former COO FAST Search and Transfer

·        Steve Kropper - founder Domania.com; former ‘Energy Czar’ for Boston City Hospital

·        David Olsson - CEO, AnchorPoint Inc.; former senior VP, Comverse Technology Inc.; founding board member of the Massachusetts Telecommunications Council

·        Perry Solomon - former CEO, Boston Coach; founder and CEO of HR Logic Inc.

·        John Strauss - former CEO Ocean Design, Inc.; co-founder of Groundwater Technology, Inc.; board member of MOCA Systems, Inc.

·        Per Suneby - part-time business development executive, LiquidPiston, Inc. and SiCortex, Inc.; co-founder and CEO, Indus River Networks, Inc.

·        David Tolwinski - former executive, Synernetics Inc. and 3Com Corp.; former CEO of Tenor Networks Inc. and Legra Systems Inc.

·        John Van Siclen -  former CEO Interwoven Inc. and Adesso Systems Inc.

The curriculum, which runs through mid-September, is being coordinated by Peter Rothstein, an executive in residence at Flagship Ventures, and Nick d’Arbeloff, executive director of the New England Clean Energy Council. The program has received pilot funding several organizations, including the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative’s John Adams Innovation Institute and the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation.
