Javelin gets European patent for intranasal ketamine
By Mass High Tech Staff
Javelin Pharmaceuticals received a European patent, until 2023, for an intranasal ketamine drug.
The pain management drug, PMI-150, has had patent protection in the U.S. since September (U.S. Patent No. 7,273,889). With the European patent, Javelin receives patent coverage in both major European Union countries and 20 European Patent Convention member states.
Ketamine is a non-opiate drug, in use for more than 30 years, and intended to reduce pain associated with nerve damage, post operation and medical procedures. PMI-150 formulates ketamine for nasal use. The drug is also a common tranquilizer used in veterinary medicine, in which form it is known on the street as “special K,” according to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.
In May, Cambridge-based Javelin (Amex: JAV) reported a stock offering of $27 million. The company employs 40 workers and reported a 2007 net loss of $31 million with no revenue.
