Aspect Medical to boost U.S. sales force head count
By Mass High Tech Staff
Aspect Medical Systems Inc. plans to expand its sales force to increase adoption of its bispectral index (BIS) technology to monitor patients’ brain activity during anesthesia, the company reports.
The Norwood-based medical devices firm said it will grow its U.S. sales force from 40 people to between 55 and 60 workers over the next three quarters. The expansion will also include a reduction in the size of sales territories to provide enhanced support for customers.
According to Aspect (Nasdaq: ASPM), BIS technology was used in about 17 percent of all U.S. surgical procedures requiring general anesthesia from March 2007 to March 2008.
Aspect, a maker of brain monitors, reported a 2007 profit of $2.3 million on revenue of $97.3 million. The company employs 288 workers. In July 2007, Aspect spent $37.7 million to buy shares of its stock back from Boston Scientific Corp. (NYSE: BSX), after Boston Scientific ended its funding for development of Aspect’s brain monitors for depression, Alzheimer’s disease and other neurological disorders.
