OLPC brews a deal with Colombia for 65K XO laptops

By Mass High Tech Staff

One Laptop Per Child says it has landed a deal to send 65,000 of its XO laptops to the state of Caldas, Colombia.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The Cambridge-based nonprofit will send 15,000 to the coffee-growing region’s smaller towns and rural areas this year. The remaining 50,000 units will be deployed to areas including the state capital, Manizales, later this year and in 2009.

Earlier this month, OLPC announced plans to release the XO-2.0 touchscreen tablet that can be folded for use as a paper-book-mimicking e-book or a standard-shaped laptop with a touchscreen keyboard. The nonprofit also partnered with Microsoft Corp. to make Windows XP available on its XO laptop.
