Biopure wins challenge to blood-cleaning patent
By Mass High Tech
Biopure Corp., a developer of blood-replacement therapies, reports it has succeeded in defending its European patent for a purification process.
Cambridge-based Biopure (Nasdaq: BPUR) said the challenge was brought by Octapharma AG, a life sciences firm headquartered in Switzerland. The patent, which was subject to Octapharma’s challenge, covers Biopure’s process of removing infectious prion proteins in the production of Hemopure, the company’s blood-replacement product.
The European patent protects the process in France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Italy, Spain and Switzerland, company officials said.
Biopure, which derives its Hemopure product from cow blood, reported a 2007 net loss of $36.3 million on revenue of $2.6 million. The firm employs 86 workers.
