Ahmed stepping down as Sonus CEO

By Mass High Tech

After ten years at the helm, Sonus Networks Inc. chairman and CEO Hassan Ahmed is stepping away from his executive role, to be replaced by former Motorola Inc. vice president and chief strategy officer Richard Nottenburg.

Hassan will continue to serve the company as chairman of the board. Nottenburg is expected to join the company in mid-June, reporting to the board of directors.

Nottenburg, who holds three degrees in electrical engineering, including a doctorate from the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne in Lausanne in Switzerland, had served at Motorola since 2004 and was responsible for the company’s corporate strategy and technology agenda, including the oversight of venture investments and acquisitions.

Aside from his new position, Nottenburg also serves on the board of directors of Comverse Technology Inc. of New York and the institutional advisory board of Carmel Ventures, an Israeli venture capital fund.

Ahmed has brought Westford-based Sonus (Nasdaq: SONS) from startup to publicly-traded company with an annual revenue better than $300 million. He is also on the board of directors for Airvana Inc. in Chelmsford and sits on the board of overseers for the Boston Museum of Science.
