Millipore touts five-year environmental impact plan

By Mass High Tech

Millipore Corp., a provider of products and services for the life sciences sector, has committed to a five-year global sustainability initiative to lower its carbon footprint by 20 percent.

The Billerica-based company says it intends to address ways to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by promoting sustainable lifestyle changes, cutting down on waste and lightening the company's reliance on non-renewable resources. To do this, Millipore (NYSE: MIL) reports that it has introduced new gas-saving hybrid vehicles and electricity-saving efficiency measures. In addition, the company says it will use renewable energy credits that match 10 percent of its energy consumption with an equal amount of wind power production.

A voluntary partner with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Millipore will host an energy management workshop in June.

Millipore, which employs 6,100 workers worldwide, reported a 2007 profit of $136.5 million, on revenue of $1.5 billion. In March, the company announced its plan to launch an operation in Singapore.
