Echo Nest nabs $500K in SBIR funds
The Echo Nest Corp. reports it has won a $500,000 Phase 2 Small Business Innovation Research grant from the National Science Foundation.
The Somerville company said it will use the funds to continue developing its "musical brain," a data mining platform that searches for information about music and listens to music on the Internet. The technology can be used to improve music personalization and behaviorally targeted advertising for music websites, according to the company.
The grant makes the Echo Nest eligible for an additional $500,000 of Phase 2B financing contingent on the company raising equity funding.
Last month, the company released its first application programming interface, called Analyze, and demonstrated in the website thisismyjam.com. The Echo Nest, founded by two ex-MIT Media Lab researchers, was founded in the summer of 2005.
