Turbine taps VCs for $40M more

Turbine Inc., a developer of massive multiplayer online role-playing games, has landed $40 million in a third round of venture capital funding, according to an online report.

Westwood-based Turbine, which makes the games Asheron's Call, Dungeons and Dragons Online and Lord of the Rings Online, has now raised a total of $88 million in venture financing, beginning in February 2005, when it announced it had secured the right to develop an online game based on the works of J.R.R. Tolkein.

According to the venture news website PEHub, Granite Global Ventures led the Series C financing, which included previous investors Highland Capital Partners, Polaris Venture Partners, Tudor Ventures and Columbia Capital. Granite Global managing partner Hani Nada has taken a seat on the Turbine board, according to the report.

Turbine spokesman Adam Mersky was unavailable for comment this morning, but Mersky told Mass High Tech on April 21 the company planned to make an announcement regarding its future plans within two weeks. Turbine's website includes employment listings for console-game positions, fueling speculation that Turbine could be expanding from the online market to the console player market. It remains unclear whether or not Turbine will be adding a console focus to its offerings.
