PerkinElmer buys lab services firm LabMetrix

Life sciences instrumentation company PerkinElmer Inc. says it has acquired California-based lab equipment test firm LabMetrix Technologies.

LabMetrix is a provider of analytical lab instrument performance qualification testing and maintenance. According to officials at Waltham-based PerkinElmer (NYSE: PKI) , adding LabMetrix will enhance PerkinElmer's existing suite of OneSource laboratory services targeting industries including pharmaceutical, medical device, food, toy and other consumer goods.

LabMetrix brought in revenue of about $5 million in 2007, PerkinElmer officials said. No further terms of the deal were disclosed.

Last month, PerkinElmer opened the PerkinElmer Inc. Center of Excellence in Singapore, to house R&D efforts in drug discovery and development, environmental monitoring, food safety and sustainable energy. In January, PerkinElmer's board named its former CFO Robert Friel as its new CEO.

PerkinElmer employs about 9,100 people, and reported a 2007 net income of $131.7 million on revenue of $1.8 billion.
