UMassOnline to launch online courses in China
The University of Massachusetts reports it has an agreement in place to offer online courses in China. UMass would be the first foreign university to be approved by the Chinese government to offer online courses in China, according to the school.
UMass officials signed the agreement with China's Continuing Education Association and the CerEdu Corp. in Beijing. Under the deal, UMassOnline will offer both credit and noncredit courses, certificate programs and degree programs from all five UMass campuses -- through online and face-to-face programs -- throughout China.
Forty UMassOnline courses, four certificate programs, and one master's degree program could be made available in China within a year, the university said.
UMass formed an academic and research partnership in 2006 with Tsinghua University. Both CCEA and CerEdu Corp. are affiliated with Tsinghua University, which has a close relationship with the Chinese Ministry of Education.
