UTC launches FIRST robotics scholarships

United Technologies Corp. has launched a scholarship program to support FIRST Robotics Competition teams.

The program is intended to benefit high school teams that have never competed in the competition, and plan to enter the 2009 Connecticut FIRST Robotics Competition. United Technologies (NYSE: UTX) said it would grant scholarships to teams in Connecticut initially, with plans to expand the program to other states where it has locations.

Starting this year, the Hartford, Conn., company will award five, three-year, $17,000 grants to teams. The company said it would choose three of the five teams from public, inner-city schools. The scholarships are intended to defray expenses including equipment, travel and entry fees.

Earlier this year, United Technologies gave a $75,000 grant to the 2008 Connecticut FIRST Robotics Competition. That regional competition began yesterday, and runs through the weekend.

United Technologies reported a 2007 net income of $4.2 billion on revenue of $54.7 billion.

FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) was founded in 1989 by New Hampshire-based inventor Dean Kamen. The nonprofit designs children's programs that build science and technology skills and interests.
