IBM: Lotus to get part of $1B investment

Just a few days after IBM Corp. celebrated the 10th anniversary of its collaboration product Lotus Sametime, Big Blue said it would pump $1 billion into its unified communications and collaboration products, which is led by Sametime.

At a meeting in its Somers, N.Y., facility, executives of IBM (NYSE: IBM) said the company would make the investment over the course of three years as it targets business customers with more than 1,000 employees for the new Sametime Unified Telephony product, which it plans to unveil at VoiceCon 2008 in Orlando, Fla., this week.

Sametime Unified Telephony will combine instant messaging, collaborative web presence, voice over IP and videoconferencing under the Lotus Notes platform.

IBM officials could not comment on whether Lotus would expand at either the Cambridge or Westford Lotus facilities.

In August 2007, the Armonk, N.Y.-based IBM purchased for an undisclosed amount WebDialogs, based in Billerica, developers of audio and video conferencing software.
