Maine defense contractor to expand, upgrade
A General Dynamics Corp. unit reports it plans to hire up to 31 new employees at a Maine gun manufacturing facility.
General Dynamics Armament and Technical Products is also modernizing the facility's operations, with new equipment and the introduction of Six Sigma lean manufacturing practices. The company said it wants to increase capacity at the Saco, Maine, plant, which produces weapons systems for aircraft and land vehicles, including grenade weapon systems, high-speed, multibarrel Gatling guns, and machine guns.
The defense contractor was recently awarded $36.6 million by the U.S. Army to produce machine guns. Work on that contract will be performed at the Saco site.
Last month, General Dynamics Armament and Technical Products' Burlington, Vt., site won a $7.8 million contract from the U.S. Navy to make Gatling guns for fighter jets.
General Dynamics Armament and Technical Products is a business unit of General Dynamics Corp., which is based in Falls Church, Va. The defense giant reported a 2007 net income of $2.1 billion on revenue of $27.2 billion.
