Bluefin wins Navy anti-mine deal worth up to $29M
The U.S. Navy has exercised an option on a previously awarded contract with Bluefin Robotics Corp. for its autonomous underwater vehicle, or AUVs.
The robotics company will provide its Bluefin-9 mine-detecting AUV to the Navy. Bluefin officials said the contract has a potential value of $29 million, and includes engineering, support and other services.
The Bluefin-9 is designed to locate mines in shallow waters and will be used in port and harbor security, according to the company.
In November 2007, the Cambridge company established worldwide distribution agreements for sales and support of its AUVs and lithium polymer batteries with companies in Australia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Vietnam, China, Fiji, India, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Israel.
Also in November, Bluefin won a $2.7 million deal from the Navy produce, deliver and support a prototype underwater bomb disposal vehicle that would scan the hulls of Navy ships for bombs.
Bluefin was founded in 1997, and is a subsidiary of the Battelle Memorial Institute.
