Airbus awards Hamilton Sundstrand a $1B electric power deal

Hamilton Sundstrand, a subsidiary of United Technologies Corp., has been selected by Airbus S.A.S to provide an electric power generation system for the French airplane manufacturer's new A350 XWB (extra -wide body).

Executives at the Windsor Locks, Conn.-based Hamilton Sundstrand estimate the deal's total value at approximately $1 billion.

Hamilton Sundstrand's A350 XWB electric power generation system comprises four, 230-volt variable frequency generators and four generator control units. The systems will be designed in Rockford, Ill., and manufactured at various Hamilton Sundstrand plants, including those in Rockford; Phoenix, Ariz.; Puerto Rico; and the Republic of Singapore.

The A350 XWB, which is slated to enter service in 2013, is expected to come in three basic versions, holding between 270 passengers and 350 passengers.

With 2007 revenue of $5.6 billion, Hamilton Sundstrand employs approximately 18,000 people.
