Vette rolls out new power-chip cooler

Cooling technology company Vette Corp. has launched a product for cooling insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBT), a type of switching power semiconductor used in electric vehicles and hybrid cars.

Vette's liquid-cooling flat tube design enables a smaller and lighter solution to cooling IGBT power semiconductors, officials said. IGBT power semiconductor applications also include power supplies and uninterruptible power supplies, variable speed refrigerators, air-conditioners, and digital amplifiers in high-end consumer audio systems.

The flat tube design forms a wider cooling surface area, allowing for greater cooling performance than typical designs, according to Chris Cutaia, president of the North American power division of Manchester, N.H.-based Vette Corp.

The systems, called Aluma-Cop, can provide cooling to an IGBT power semiconductor device without an aluminum carrier block, making it smaller and lighter than current systems.

Founded in 2004, Vette Corp. is a thermal management technology company focused on computer, communications and industrial electronic equipment manufacturers.

Late last year, Vette inked as series of agreements with IBM Corp., for data centers, cluster computing and data storage cooling systems.
