Skyworks teams with Samsung on femtocell apps

Jumping on growing interest in home wireless base stations -- femtocells -- Woburn's wireless semiconductor maker Skyworks Solutions Inc. reports signing a new deal with Samsung for the use of Skyworks' transceivers, amplifiers and other products in the Korean electronic maker's femtocell applications.

Femtocells, or small cellular base stations designed for residential and small business environments, help provide enhanced coverage in wireless networks. The technology has garnered a lot of attention during the past year. According to research firm In-Stat, the worldwide installation of such devices is expected to grow to 40 million installations by 2011 and surpass 100 million end-users over the next five years, representing a market opportunity of more than $4 billion.

Skyworks, founded in 1962, reported a net loss of $88.1 million on revenue of $773.7 million for 2006.
