Indevus, Alkermes partner on COPD drug
Executives of Alkermes Inc. and Indevus Pharmaceuticals Inc. say the two life-sciences companies have agreed to join forces to develop an inhaled drug known as ALKS 27 to treat chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
The companies plan to initiate a Phase 2a clinical study of ALKS 27 during the first half of this year, officials said.
Sharing costs of developing ALKS 27, Alkermes of Cambridge has agreed to provide the drug, with Indevus of Lexington committing to handle clinical development. Financial details of the agreement were not disclosed.
The U.S. market for COPD products is estimated at more than $3 billion, according to the companies.
With 760 employees, Alkermes reported 2006 net income of $3.8 million on revenue of $143.1 million. Indevus employs 158 workers and reported a 2006 net loss of $50.6 million on revenue of $50.5 million.
