3M bites into oral care biz with Brontes buy

Lexington's Brontes Technologies Inc. reports being acquired by 3M for $95 million.

Brontes, which develops 3-D imaging technology, was founded in 2003 as part of the $50K Entrepreneurship Competition at MIT, at which they were one of two runners-up for the top prize.

The acquisition adds to 3M's proprietary intraoral scanning technology that enables three-dimensional digital dental impressions used to design and produce crowns, bridges and orthodontic appliances, company officials said.

The St. Paul, Minn.-based 3M employs 69,315 workers. In 2005, it reported $3.1 billion in net income.
