Virtual High School program marks 10 years
A Maynard-based consortium of schools announced the 10-year anniversary of a project to provide a high school education online.
Hudson Public Schools and the Concord Consortium banded together and used grant funds to establish the Virtual High School. The program enrolls 9,000 students from 29 states in 24 countries.
A 2005 study reported online enrollment nationwide increased from 1.98 million in 2003 to 2.35 million in 2004, according to Needham-based Sloan Consortium. Sloan, a nonprofit organization focused on online education, also found online enrollment grew 18 percent in 2005.
Virtual High School was founded in 1996 and was honored with the 2005 excellence award by the U.S. Distance Learning Association.
The nonprofit organization reports it plans to celebrate the decade milestone during ceremonies set to begin Sept. 28 in Danvers.
