MegaNet launches wireless broadband service on the South Coast

MegaBroadband, a subsidiary of Fall River-based MegaNet Communications Corp., is launching the first commercial use of the 2.3 gigahertz wireless communications service (WCS) spectrum in the United States.

With the help of Navini Networks Inc. in Texas and Bal/Rivgam LLC in Wilton, Conn., the company will deploy an initial network that will support up to 3,000 users, with expansion plans to serve more than 10,000, in Bristol County. Navini will provide its non-line-of-sight wireless technology, while Bal/Rivgam will provide the WCS spectrum license.

The 2.3GHz WCS spectrum is a relatively narrow-band wireless frequency that can be used for high-speed communications, including voice over Internet protocol and, eventually, WiMax 802.16e, capable of delivering large amounts of two-way data at high speeds.

However, according to the company, the commercial launch is significant because of regulatory constraints and timeframe issues imposed by the Federal Communications Commission. Carriers owning 2.3GHz WCS spectrum must commercially deploy by mid-2007 or risk losing the rights to it.
