EMC founder Egan resigns as ambassador to Ireland
By Anne Taylor
Richard Egan, founder and chairman emeritus of EMC Corp., has submitted to President George Bush his resignation as U.S. ambassador to Ireland.
According to Bill Keppler, a press officer with the U.S. State Department, Egan requested to be released from his term as ambassador, citing personal reasons. Egan has served as ambassador to Ireland for approximately 15 months, having been appointed by President Bush in spring 2001. Keppler said the White House and Egan are now working out the details of his departure.
"They are trying to make a seamless transition," Keppler said, "to minimize the gap (between ambassadors)."
Egan, the E in EMC, founded the storage solutions company with Roger Marino in 1979. He stepped down as chief executive at EMC in 1992.
Michael Gallant, director of public relations of EMC Corp., said the company would not comment on anything pertaining to Egan because he has no more business ties to the company, other than being chairman emeritus. EMC has laid off about 7,000 employees in the past two years, a 30 percent reduction in its workforce.
