Clickfil.com narrowly avoids Mooninite-style freakout, lowballs price at which commuters would risk death by at least $200

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

The Herald’s Freeze Frame blog, written by its photographers, reports a marketing snafu near the Somerville/Charlestown line, apparently a site with magical properties that encourage that kind of thing.

The billboard, for Clickfil.com, asks what you’d do for $300. As an example of what you, Expressway driver, might do for 300 bucks, the ad featured a mannequin of a man in a business suit walking tightrope-style on top of the billboard. The Herald reports both Somerville and Boston fire departments got calls about a possible jumper, and the mannequin has since been taken down.

Clickfil appeared in MHT’s Startup Report earlier this month, and in an MHT report last week. The Woburn-based startup has developed a web site that automates home heating-oil ordering and billing.

Including the mannequin may have been a questionable marketing move, but the question is weirder: Wouldn’t it take a lot more than $300 to get you up onto a giant billboard?

Evergreen Solar makes deal with Devens

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

The Herald reports Evergreen Solar has agreed to spend about $1.5 million on noise-reduction measures at its Devens solar panel-manufacturing plant so it can continue its 24 hour operations.

As a result, the Devens Enterprise Commission extended the plant’s occupancy through October.

Neighbors had complained about noise pollution coming from the plant, saying it had given ulcers to local horses.

Evergreen Solar to be fined for noise pollution

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009

The Herald follows up its earlier story on Evergreen Solar’s noisy plant with a report on the $1000-a-day fine the Devens Enterprise Commission plans to impose if the company doesn’t quiet down:

In exchange for creating 350 jobs, the Marlboro-based firm received $23 million in state grants, $17.5 million in low-interest loans and a low-cost, 30-year lease of state-owned property in Devens.

But since the plant has come on line, neighbors say its around-the-clock noise has destroyed their lives.

“It’s like our tax dollars are being used to torture us,” said Harvard resident Janice Perry, whose farm abuts the new manufacturing plant.

The plant is supposed to generate no more than 38 decibels, but neighbors say it often reaches 49 decibels according to their studies.

Herald: Mass. casual gaming companies multiplying

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

The Herald takes a look at the state’s growing casual gaming cluster, including companies WorldWinner, Floodgate, Funkitron and Quick Hit.

WorldWinner also turned up in an MHT story about the converging video game and film industries last week.

MHT checked in on Quick Hit last month. Another casual games startup, Somerville’s Chump Studios, made its pitch for funding last month. And in March, we spotlighted Creat Studios, which made three casual games for Sony’s PlayStation Network.

Herald: Evergreen Solar’s clean tech bad for immediate environment

Friday, June 5th, 2009

The Herald reports Evergreen Solar’s Devens facility is a bit on the noisy side, giving ulcers to local horses. I smell a defense application.
