Scott Kirsner gets another job on Morrissey Blvd.

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

Scott Kirsner continues to thumb his nose at the journalism-industry apocalypse: His Innovation Economy blog, which he used to do for the love of the game, will now generate income from the New York Times Co. (for now).

The columnist/blogger/conference organizer’s blog has moved to Boston.com:

I’m moving it to Boston.com first because it makes sense for the blog and my Sunday Boston Globe column to live in the same place, and second, because I think it’ll attract some additional traffic there. I was also part of the founding crew of Boston.com back in 1995, so it feels like a natural place to be.

Globe puts content online again

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009

The Boston Globe has released GlobeReader, Adobe Air-powered desktop software that will download the contents of the newspaper daily, so it can be read offline.

Dan Kennedy, who has followed the parent company’s similar TimesReader,  called the product “slick and highly readable,” but said it’s not the answer to all the problems at Morrissey Blvd.

It’s an interesting strategy and, combined with other delivery platforms, such as the $9.99-a-month Kindle edition, may help chart a path out of the current mess in which the newspaper business finds itself. Such projects are not going to be nearly enough, but they could help.

NASA robotics chief talks to Globe

Monday, June 15th, 2009

The Globe talks to astronaut and MIT and UMass Amherst alumna Catherine Coleman, who will spend six months on the International Space Station next year. Coleman, NASA’s chief of robotics for the astronaut office, was in town last week for MIT’s Giant Leaps conference.

First off the bat: Peeing in space.

Harvard studies economic behavior of gorillas

Monday, June 8th, 2009

Harvard Researchers are studying gorillas — including Little Joe, who escaped a few years back — to learn about economic behavior of humans, according to the Globe, which has retained Little Joe as a consultant for its negotiations with the Boston Newspaper Guild.

Most disappointing part:

”Looking at gorillas won’t tell us everything, but will give us more information about where we come from.”

Friday, June 5th, 2009

The Globe reports that Burlington-based Palomar Medical Technologies has won FDA approval for its laser, designed for use in the home to treat wrinkles around the eyes. What could go wrong?
