Children’s Hospital research gets hearts growing new cells

The treatment could help heart attack victims or children with congenital heart defects, according to the hospital. In the July 24 issue of the journal Cell, the researchers show an injection of the growth factor neuregulin1 (NRG1) into an animal who has had a heart attack can stimulate heart muscle growth.

Former Diaphorm wins $1.2M for new Marine helmet

Defense contractor Ceradyne Inc. reports its Salem, N.H.-based unit has been awarded Marine Corps contracts worth approximately $1.2 million for new test helmets using advanced materials. 

Vistaprint slammed by IP lawsuit, bad analyst report

New Jersey-based ColorQuick LLC has filed a lawsuit alleging Vistaprint and OfficeMax Inc. (NYSE: OMX) have been illegally using a patented process for fast printing. Meanwhile, Citron Research issued a negative report on the company Tuesday, suggesting VistaPrint could lose 44 percent of its net income – the portion it derives from referral partnerships with third-party websites — as the U.S. Senate begins an inquiry into such online referral programs.

SynDevRx socks away $570K in funding

Cambridge-based SynDevRx lists a total of 11 backers in the filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, but doesn’t identify them. The company had said in March that it was looking to close a Series A round of $4 million, but federal documents show no other round except for a seed funding in January.

Skyscape bought by Physicians Interactive, which is moving HQ to Bay State

Marlborough-based Skyscape Inc. has been acquired by Physicians Interactive LLC of Illinois, a competitor in the delivery of medical information via mobile devices.

Bain Capital, Village Ventures back $15M round in TxVia

Bain Capital Ventures has made a new investment in TxVia Inc., a New York-based credit-card processing software company. The Boston-based venture arm of private equity firm Bain Capital is leading a $15.5 million Series C round in the company, along with fellow new investor New York City Investment Fund.

Zoll reports earnings tumbled in Q3

The Chelmsford-based maker of heart defibrillators and other medical devices reported net income was approximately $1.5 million for the third quarter of the company’s fiscal year, which begins in October. Profits for the corresponding period in 2008 were $5.7 million.

Pair of local VCs back 5Min’s $7.5M round

Globespan Capital Partners has joined its Boston neighbor Spark Capital Partners as a new investor in a $7.5 million Series B round for 5minutes Inc. The New York-based company, which does business as 5min, operates 5min.com, a sharing website for instructional videos, supported by advertising revenue.

Archemix teams with miRagen on therapeutics

Cambridge-based biotech Archemix Corp. reports it is collaborating with miRagen Therapeutics Inc., a Colorado-based biopharmaceutical company, to develop therapies based on aptamers and microRNA.
